Background

The native text-to-speech (TTS) feature in Engage's EPUB reader aims to enable users to hear the text read on pages in the EPUB course materials available. By providing a robust set of features endeavored to facilitate the reading and comprehension experience for users, Unizin strives to deliver a more equitable and friendly experience for users of all abilities.

Keyboard-based Interactions

To accommodate users who may have certain impairments and require reading accommodations, Unizin has developed a set of keyboard-based interactions or shortcuts to enable users to navigate through and interact with content in Engage's EPUB reader. 

TTS shortcuts are not case-sensitive.

TTS Shortcuts

The Element in the context of Text To Speech is used to dictate the portion of text that can be selected within the material that users would like to be read. There are several shortcuts that are available to help users modify the size of the Element and navigate through their course materials.

By pressing the "S" key, this shortcut enables users to select a sentence within the material users would like to be read.

GBy pressing the "G" key, this shortcut enables users to select a paragraph within the material users would like to be read.

KBy pressing the "K" key, this shortcut enables users to turn on/off the Element or portion of text within the material users would like to be read.

By pressing the left-arrow key, this shortcut enables users to navigate to previous Elements within the material.

By pressing the right-arrow key, this shortcut enables users to navigate to subsequent Elements within the material.

FIf users navigate past the first Element on the page, by pressing the "F" key, this shortcut enables users to jump back to the first Element of the page.

BIf users navigate away from the current Element on the page, by pressing the "B" key, this shortcut enables users to jump back to the location of the current Element.


There are also Speaking shortcuts available to enable users to go through the material at the pace that best suits them.

CThis shortcut enables a user to turn on/off the "Continuous Reading" mode. When enabled by pressing the "C" key, the reading will progress beyond the portion of the text highlighted by the Element Highlight.


TTS Preferences Toolbar

In order to access the TTS Preferences Toolbar, exit the full-screen mode within the reader.

Users can customize their text-to-speech experience within the TTS Preferences Toolbar. The toolbar can be accessed by navigating to the frequency icon in the far left panel of the reader and clicking the frequency icon. In the toolbar, you can modify or access the following TTS features:

Element Highlight

The Element Highlight distinguishes the portion of text (word, sentence, or paragraph) users would like to initiate the spoken text. Users can select the color of the Element Highlight.

Speaking HighlightThe Speaking Highlight distinguishes the word that is being spoken while it is being spoken. Users can select the color of the Speaking Highlight.
Playback SpeedUsers can adjust the speed at which content is read aloud.
Continuous ReadingUsers can turn on/off the capability to read beyond the portion of text distinguished by the Element Highlight.
Show TTS ShortcutsTo access a menu that describes all of the TTS shortcuts, users can either click the "Show TTS Shortcuts" button or press "Shift" + "?".

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I'm unable to access the TTS Preferences Toolbar. How can I pull that up in my reader? In order to access the TTS Preferences Toolbar, exit the full-screen mode within the reader. You will see a left-hand panel appear that contains a frequency icon. When the frequency icon is selected, the TTS preferences Toolbar will be available. 

  • Is Text-To-Speech only available for EPUB content? Yes, the text-to-speech feature is only natively available in Engage's EPUB reader.
