Stepping Stones: A Faculty Development Curriculum for Learning Analytics Use
Unizin’s Stepping Stones curriculum is a cross-institutional effort to prepare faculty to use learning analytics data ethically, effectively, and equitably. Focused on learning analytics available within individual Canvas course sites, materials were designed to accommodate a variety of audiences, goals, modalities, workshop structures, and outcomes. It’s now been successfully piloted at several member institutions who are building on this momentum and expanding the resources available.
Our institutions have unique cultures, infrastructure, and policies so a one-size-fits-all solution is impossible. Materials will still need to be adapted to help each institution’s faculty find local support and resources, but a lot of the initial work is ready to go. Facilitators can rely on these resources to expedite the creation of learning analytics workshops and have reassurance about content coverage and material quality, while using their workshop planning and facilitation skills to create and deliver a customized learning experience for their instructors. We have also created the Stepping Stones Google Group to serve as an open access platform for posting questions, sharing updates, and connecting with others interested in collaborative creation of new materials.
Access to the curriculum is available via Canvas Commons USA (search for “Stepping Stones” through your institution’s Canvas Commons access portal) or by downloading the imscc cartridge files (Canvas Course format) here.
